John F. Maloney
President
John Maloney began working in CYO in 1961 with two people: Father Warren Savage and Don Quin. Bishop Joseph McGuire requested that the three of us work in a religious way to build a better CYO. At the time, in 1961, there were 9 teams. Our Lady of Hope, Our Lady of Sacred Heart, Cathedral, Sacred Heart, Saint Thomas of West Springfield, St. Mary's of Longmeadow, Mt. Carmel, Holy Cross and Holy Name. Today, CYO is made up of 22 Catholic Perishes with 3,000 young athletes. John Maloney served in CYO for 51 years and a President of New England CYO for 16 years. He is a graduate of Cathedral High School, Monson Academy, Holyoke Community College, Westfield State, and Springfield College. One of John Maloney's goal in CYO was to bring young ladies into CYO competition. This was accomplished in 1986 and has grown today so that they almost equal the amount of young men that play in CYO. Some of the great women that have come from CYO are Jillian Danker, Shelia Danker, Kristen Kingston, State Representative Cokley Rivera, Felicia Baron, and Bequise Abdual Kadar. CYO is a great game and over the years is John's hope is that he has played a major role in this development. He has been recognized for his work with the in this area by the Hickock Award given by the Basketball Hall Of Fame in Springfield.
